To do this we had to make our way to Tournai in Belgium (approximately a 3 hour drive). To make sure we didn't miss it we decided to use the fastest way possible, the motorways ( cost bloody €24!).
Our plan was to catch the action about 5 km from the end. Anyway, we got to Tournai and not knowing the area and with roads blocked off, we parked where there were a lot of cars and set off to find a viewing spot.
All the locals that I passed did not understand English but I mimed bike riding and they would nod and point and we would head in that direction.
Finally I could see the crowds and barriers so Luke and I stepped up the pace. I could see two bike riders approaching so I started waving wildly for Gayle, Jessie and Jake to catchup so they didn't miss it. Turns out it was just a couple of ordinary cyclists riding along!
Fortunately we hadn't been waiting long when what you don't see on T.V. - a carnival on wheels - started coming.

The atmosphere was pretty electric. Floats with music, dancing and spruikers to whip up the excitement level of the crowd. They also sprayed you with water and threw free goodies at you.

We were at maximum excitement level now - this had to be it. But no, it was another good hour before anything else happened. Then suddenly helicopters were flying over head. The riders were approaching. I pushed Gayle out onto the street to get a photo of the lead riders. By the time she pushed the shutter the pack had almost mowed her down but I was yelling excitedly at her to get another shot.

And that, my dear friends, was it. All over in a matter of seconds except for one pack of stragglers at the end. I can see now why they always say it is better to view it on an uphill climb leg.
However those few seconds were worth all the driving and waiting.
