Letters to Juliet

As we left Pisa we made our way to Verona - the home of Juliet. For those of you who haven't read Shakespeare (or watched the movie Letters to Juliet... Like a real West academic would!) then you should probably know that Juliet would secretly meet with her beloved Romeo from a Balcony in her house. Well today we got the opportunity to see this very balcony.

Thousands of people come here every year with many making declarations of their love by any means possible, including locking a Padlock to the gate in the courtyard below the balcony

Or by writing messages (including their initials on chewing gum) inside the tunnel in the entrance to the courtyard.

While not exactly like in the movie, Letters to Juliet (where people would tuck letters into the cracks of the stone wall of Juliet's home asking her for advise), you can still seek her advice by placing your letter into her mail box.

For those not declaring or questioning their love, there was also the opportunity to receive good luck by holding on to the breast of Juliet which has become a tradition when visiting this attraction.

While this was the only thing we did in the pretty city of Verona, as it was a stop off on our way to Venice, it was incredibly worthwhile and I would say it's a must for anyone who likes Shakespeare, history or the movie Letters to Juliet.
