The Bears of Bern

After our trip to the Swiss Army Knife museum (see Swiss ingenuity) we made our way to Bern the capital of Switzerland to see their famous bears.

The story of the bears is that the founder of Bern went hunting in the area of which he wanted to create a new town. The first animal he killed was a bear so he made the bear the town crest. Many years later people brought in bears as a zoo and put them in a concrete pit to live like a zoo.

Now days the bears are kept in a more friendly environment were they can swim, sleep and play in complete safety in a man made forest interpretation. The bears are still on display and you can see them for free at Bern
