Bridges and Backstreets

Once again we lucked in with location with our camp ground Fusina only requiring us to walk over the street to catch the ferry to Venice.

The guide books advised buying a proper map of Venice, saying that the free tourist ones were not detailed enough, but we decided to take up the challenge.

What proceeded was a lot of fun as we tried to make our way to the landmarks of Piazza San Marco and Rialto Bridge. The buildings are so tall that looking up did not help. We twisted and turned through the narrow streets and over the many bridges (there are 450 bridges in Venice) making many stops to admire the glass and leather shops that we came across on the way.

As you can see from the photos we did eventually find both places.

Of course we had to also have a ride in a Gondola. Not cheap but a definite must do (€80 for about half an hour).

Our ride took us down the Grand Canal and also through a network of smaller canals.

These smaller canals were our favourite. Venice is slowly sinking and so now the bottom floors of most buildings have been abandoned.

Venice is a definite must do. A unique and interesting mixture of shabby and beauty.
