Sorrento - Another unique seaside experience for the Wests

With four days to go before we needed to be in Bari to catch our ferry to Greece and after a rather hot night in Florence we decided that sea side was where we needed to be so we set off for Sorrento to be 'vacationers' rather than ' sight-seers' for a few days.

However Sorrento was worthy of some exploration before we parked ourselves pool side. We started our walk from Grand Marina which was where our campground was perched. From the back of the campground was a (what we were soon to learn was typical) steep set of stairs that led us into the old fishing village of Grand Marina. Not sure how much fishing still happens here although there were numerous what we called Uncle Willie's nightmares (tangles of nets, pots and fishing paraphernalia) in various ramshackle old buildings. The rest of the seafront was private 'beaches' and restaurants. See the photos below for an idea of what a 'beach' is here.

From Grand Marina we followed a centuries old path into Sorrento. The stones were shiny from wear and the high walls were punctuated here and there with little alcoves containing religious statues, figurines and paintings.

After going through a few streets we we once again back at a cliff face. This once again meant going down steep steps to reach the water. And so it is with Sorrento and the rest of the coast line along the Gulf of Naples. In general the villages are perched high above the water and to reach it you use the stairs built into, attached to or tunneled through the rock faces.

This is what a 'beach' looks like. Basically they are platforms built over the water. What sand there is is a dark grey. I guess the amazing blue water makes up for this. The beach on the left is a private one with cute little changing rooms, sun lounges, umbrella's etc. The one on the right is public - lay you towel on the boards wherever you can to claim some space.

We finished our walk along one of the main roads with the other thousands of tourists.

The rest of the afternoon was spent lazing beside the pool, reading books and sipping the local tipples - wine and Limoncello.
