Lisbon Highlights

Today we were in Portugal's capital city, Lisbon. We decided to go on a bus tour around the highlights of Lisbon. Our first stop was Belem we look at the tomb of Vasco da Gama in a cathedral, the Belem tower and the Monument to the Discoveries.

We also had a morning tea of traditional Portuguese custard tarts. We then headed into the old part of town, Almafa, that wasn't destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. We got out of the bus and started to walk through the Almafa area to another cathedral, you can probably tell by now that dad was over the moon to see another cathedral. Dads eyes light up when he saw that a religious service in Spanish was going on inside, the tour guide said sorry and got us out of there and straight on to the bus, Dad was broken hearted. The Almafa area was a labyrinth of narrow paved roads and original Lisbon houses, many tiled on the outside and all with wrought iron balconies and washing strung up outside.

We then took the bus up to the greatest view in Lisbon spreading from the top of the view point all the way over the Lisbon Golden Gate Bridge and the Lisbon Jesus on the mound (both are identical to the ones in San Francisco and Rio).

There is a statue placed below the view point of the president who decided to rebuild Lisbon after the earthquakes, he is put here so he can look out on to his work.

It was a good day and we went back to the campsite and relaxed at the pool for the rest of the day. I probably wouldn't come back to Lisbon again because there isn't much to see and do here.
