Capri and the Amalfi Coast

Today we did a mini cruise to Amalfi via the island of Capri. Definitely the way to go to avoid the nail biting driving of this area.

This 'rock' is a diving Mecca for the Gulf of Naples. About 11 metres down is a rock ledge with a statue of the patron saint for divers and it is also where the free diving record has been set.

Next it was off to Capri. This provided the highlight of the trip when we were able to swim off the boat which anchored out from one of the Capri grottos. We had never before swam in such deep, blue water. Luke also liked Tiberius' jump which was an enormous cliff face with one of Emperor Tiberius' villas at the top. Apparently from here he could push any servants or young lovers who had displeased him.

The next sight was this group of three rocks below, supposedly the home of Ulysees legendary mermaids. They are privately owned islands currently owned by Rudolf Nureyev ( don't think I have spelled that correctly, but I mean the Russian dancer).

Then it was around the Amalfi coast line to Positano and Amalfi. We waved as we sailed past Sophia Lauren's villa - she didn't wave back.

It was a lovely, relaxing day although the boys wished they had brought a pack of cards or book for the return journey.

It is certainly striking coast line but, like Sorrento, hard work to get to the water from the houses perched on the hills. Just to the right of the shadow in the above photo you can see a squiggly, white line. This is the track down to the water. It was like this all along the coast line. It would be hot work to get back home after your swim. Certainly makes you appreciate our own easy to get to, sandy, white beaches back home.
