Dune de Pilat

We were going to go to Pamplona today to look around but we got caught in Saturday traffic on the motorway and in the last two hours we did less then one hundred kilometres. We were just south of Bordeaux along the Côte d' Argent so decided to head to Arcachon to set up camp rather than spend the day crawling along in a car. We looked in our lonely planet guide at what to see. It said to go see Europe's biggest sand dune spreading south for 3km. The dune moves east every year by about 4.5m and has covered trees, roads and even a hotel. We got there and it was packed. We managed to find a parking spot and went to climb up the hill of sand.

We got to the top and saw the view, waited for mum and went down again (the fast way - straight over the side of the dune).

The view was fairly spectacular spreading kilometers in all directions from the ocean to the pine forest behind you and there were heaps of people who bring their frisbees, kites and picnics for a day on the dune.

It was fairly cool but it isn't a must do, but if you travel close to it it's well worth a look see.
