How did we end up in a village in Yorkshire?

We left Edinburgh early on Sunday morning with plenty of time to set up camp in York before our 3 pm chocolate tour. We even managed to fit in a toilet and coffee break in Newcastle. The further south we drove the sunnier it got - things were definitely looking good!

Our first impression of York, with it's city walls, was beautiful! Unfortunately then followed a series of unfortunate events (did you guess this was coming?)

The direct road to the campground was closed for repairs. The TomTom could just not accept this and no matter how much we twisted and turned to force it to find an alternative route, it insisted on taking us back to this same spot. Of course all this twisting and turning involved the usual precision driving down narrow, busy streets often coming to a dead end at those interesting city walls. By the time we found an alternative Mark had worked up quite a sweat and the rest of us were sitting very still holding our breathes and not making a sound.

Success! We eventually got to the camp ground to find that it was closed for renovations. Oh well, time to seek some comfort in our chocolate tour. We would continue the search for accommodation after.

Full of feel good endorphins from our choc fest we continued the search. Hmm, all the caravan parks closer to town didn't accept tents. Time to look further afield. Which is how we ended up in the quaint little village of Slingsby at a very clean and tidy camp ground. So nice in fact we are going to stay an extra night.

Of course being Sunday night in a village there were no shops open so what a great excuse to go to the pub in the next village (Hovingham) for roast beef and Yorkshire pudding!

  1. We had a similar tom-tom experience in Bruges (good movie by the way - In Bruges, if you are going to Belgium and like historic cities - Bruges is wonderful).
They were resetting the cobble stones and had streets closed. We went outside walled city - drove to point 180 degrees from starting point and reset tom-tom and got to designation. Tense time though.
