History of the West family name

As we were stumbling through the streets of Ireland we entered a shop and saw heraldic name family crests. Even though we have a strong Aboriginal background the name West had to come from a white man somewhere. We were able to find the West family crest with some history on the back. It is of both English and German origin and comes from the meaning of somebody living west of a settlement in Medieval times.
